You Know Social Media is Important When Creating a Blog is a Homework Assignment

So I created this blog because I have to. That's honesty right there. I'd rather not write a blog, and that's not because I don't have anything important or interesting to say, but because I don't understand why anyone would want to read it. Blogs are nice for keeping family and friends updated on life, but other than that...WHO REALLY CARES?

Well apparently my professor cares. Every decision we make is in response to some motivating factor, and in this case it is getting an A in my class. So despite my reservations about writing a blog, I am participating in the assignment because I want an A. (Once again, honesty.)

Now that we all understand my attitude towards blogging...here we go!

My first assignment is to write about what writing means to me. WOW! There is so much to say that I don't even know where to begin.

I think that the most important place to start is with my freedom to write whatever I want. As I'm sure you will soon learn, I'm pretty interested in all things political, so naturally I want to acknowledge the rights granted to everyone by the Constitution, and, in this case, specifically the 1st Amendment.

I'm sure we all know what the 1st Amendment says, so don't worry I won't quote the whole thing, but it is easy to forget that our right to the freedom of speech is special. If my goal of this blog was to write about my dissatisfaction with President/Senator/Congressman ___________ (insert any name here), I could do it. I could write a blog about my hatred of garbage trucks, or my love of sushi. I could write about anything I want. That is amazing! That same freedom, which so many of us take for granted, is not a global right. Not every person on this Earth is so fortunate.

And that is why to me writing means so much. It means expressing yourself, sharing your ideas, and engaging others in anyway that you want, whether people want to hear it or not, and whether people agree with you or not.

So despite my dislike of writing a blog, I am thankful that I have the right to tell you all what I think, even if no one out there (except my professor) cares.

OH! And one more thing. In case you didn't know exactly how significant social media is, check out this video!!! It's incredible.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIFYPQjYhv8

What Writing Means to Me

South African novelist and 1991 Nobel Prize Winner Nadine Gordimer once said of writing, “Writing is making sense of life. You work your whole life and perhaps you've made sense of one small area.” This short quote completely embodies the meaning of writing in my life. I have never understood those of my peers who complain about professors who assign papers or struggle to produce just 5 pages of material for an assignment. For me, writing is not a chore; it is a way to explore.

When I am working on a piece of writing, the act of putting words to paper forces me to scrutinize exactly what I am saying. Do I feel more or less passionately then I thought I did? Why do I feel this way? Writing is an outlet for investigation of not only the world around me, but additionally of myself. Since I started keeping a journal sometime during my freshman year of college (though I don't faithfully write in it, nor is every thought coherent) I have found it a very therapeutic experience. Putting my thoughts in writing helps me to get a handle on so many issues in my life, and make decisions regarding those issues.

To me, writing is essential. It is communication in its highest form. Ideally, we would all articulate as well as we write, unfortunately this is not the case. That is why whenever anyone has anything really important to convey orally, (a political ideal, a sermon, a song, etc.) 99% of the time it is written down first. Though I rarely have an issue with public speaking, or addressing a large group of people, I always find myself to be much more confident and communicate a much clearer message if I write out what I plan to say first.

In short, writing to me is absolutely vital. Not only does it provide me with a creative, reflective and educational outlet, but it aids in the conveying of my most important thoughts to those around me. Without writing, I would be just another person struggling not only to articulate my point of view, but also struggling just to make sense of what goes on in my life. With writing, I am on the right path to becoming a successful and memorable individual.

What Writing Means to Me

Writing means a lot of different things to me. Most importantly, I think writing serves as a personal back up system. Whether someone is writing in a diary, for an assignment or any other purpose, it helps people save the thoughts they had in a location where it will remain for however long the writer intends. I use writing as a way to organize my day, grocery shop, remember what my professors said in lecture and for many other daily activities. I don't know what I would do if I wasn't able to write my plans down on a piece of paper. What seems such an simple action really lays the foundation for days, weeks, months and more.

I also think writing is an excellent way to relax and relieve stress. Although many people think they can only rely on creative writing, even writing down the top three tasks I want to finish before the end of the day really helps put things into perspective. I wish I used creative writing more on a daily basis. I used to really enjoy creative writing when I was younger, but as school became more of a time commitment I didn't have as much time to do personal creative writing. Although this class focuses on PR writing, I hope I can find a way to express my thoughts and creativity through the duration of the class.

Lastly, I think writing serves as a foundation for an evolving world. It provides a gateway into many other forms of media including TV, radio, the Internet, movies, newspapers, music, books and more. Without writing, none of these outlets would exist. Writing is one of those things that is always changing and will always reflect changes in society. It will be interesting to see how much it changes in the coming years.
