My Response to "Anatomy of a Bad Pitch"

One of my biggest fears is that I will be "outed" for sending a bad pitch to the  media. There is no standard for pitching and I worry that I will not meet the proper requirements. I thought that David Fleet's article "The Anatomy of a Bad Pitch" was very informative and helpful. I liked how he told where the pitch went wrong and gave advice on how to improve it. From the article I learned that it is important to make your pitch personalized, show the recipient that you know the type of work that they do, include a call to action and sign your name. Sounds easy, right? Even though I will most likely be nervous the first time I pitch a story, if I follow fleets advice as well as what I have learned in class then I know that I will be able to pitch properly and build relationships.

I couldn’t agree more Laura. The tough part of going into PR is that in any career you make mistakes starting out, the hard part of our chosen field is that everybody gets to see your mistakes. If you’re an accountant you can make a mistake it will most likely stay internal, a company might never deal with you or your name again for that very reason in PR.
The “Anatomy of a Bad Pitch” gives a deep insight in what not to do which in many cases is just as helpful as what to do. Make sure you don’t give bad pitches and you should be able to sleep better at night working in Public Relations.

Pitching stories is definitely intimidating. It can be scary pitching a story to your editor/boss as a reporter too.

I also agree Lauren. Being "outed" is also one of my biggest fears with going into the PR profession. Although I am nervous, I am excited to start getting more practice at pitching.
