Social Media Gaining Ground with Major Companies

It's amazing to me that, even during a recession, social media use with major corporations is still going strong and even gaining ground. I guess I'd just assume they have bigger fish to fry. Not so, according to this MarketWire article. Apparently 50% of all companies are increasing their investment level in social media monitoring. There is a wealth of free-flowing, unmonitored information on these sites where people feel free to vent, rave, or offer suggestions about businesses and products. In a true testament to how important social media has become, companies are now hiring people with social media monitoring as part of their job description. I think such improvements in this type of monitoring is exciting because it truly does give more power to the people. We consumers have something to say, and social media is quickly becoming one of the best and easiest ways to get our voices heard.

I guess people just really want to get on this trend before it's too late. I do think that there are better things to focus a company's attention on, but as Thomas Friedman points out, a company owes its greatest duty to increasing profits and if social media can do that, then go for it. I just think a bit of temperance given the current stand of the economy may be a better approach as I feel there is a social media glass ceiling that is just ignored by marketing and PR professionals.

In my mind, it doesn't suprise me that social media is really taking off in big corporations. In terms of budget, a social media campaign is significantly less expensive than say a PR or advertising one.So in this not so awesome economy and would assume that many companies are seeing social media as a viable but economic way to get their name out there. Also in terms of the economy, consumers are spending less, especailly discretionary spending. By having a place for customers to give imput, vent, or even compliment compaones, I think this would be a great way for companies to keep ahold of their current customers and make sure they keep them loyal through these rough times.
