Will Black Friday Spending Trend Continue?

While reading PR Weekly I came across an interesting article on holiday spending this season. Although the nation is facing economic hardships, individuals spent an average of 7.2% more than they did last year. The 27 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas challenges communication pros to reach out to their customers. For example, this Christmas season Kmart is offering a lay away program. I believe this is a great PR strategy. Trying to get consumers to open their wallets, while also showing the consumer they are aware of the economic problems the consumer is facing, shows that Kmart is trying to accommodate the customer. Hopefully over the next couple weeks businesses will reach out directly to the consumer, in an effort to promote spending.

I agree, this is an excellent PR promotion, by KMart letting people know this, they are basically getting free PR. Plus with the cost of advertising, I'm sure large stores like KMart could use some free advertising. I'm sure with shrinking budgets, PR professionals will have to get more creative in terms of getting their client's brands out to the public. It should be interesting to see what practitioners come up with.

I feel that people spent more this Black Friday in order to save money on the great deals offered. I agree that K-Mart is tapping into excellent PR strategy by using the Lay Away system. This should definitely attract new consumers.

It’s truly amazing how many people go after the goods on that day. People in our society love a good deal and are willing to go to lengths to find them. Welcome to Capitalism! I even saw article in Sports Illustrated about how Chad Johnson got up to get a guitar hero set. What it our world coming to, a consumer heaven or hell??
