Dear Friend,
Let me begin by letting you know that I appreciate your concern for me as I plan to enter the field of Public Relations after I graduate in May. I know you mean well, and it is easy to believe that PR is made up of negative manipulations, because that is the side of PR we have seen in movies and TV most often--it makes for good entertainment, that's for sure.
The Public Relations I intend on going into is all about enhancing the reputation of a company or client. Yes, this can be done in a sneaky way, but it is all about putting a positive spin on issues in order to help to company stay in a good light. It's about finding the silver lining, in a way--something I've always been good at!
In any field, there is a 'dark side'--and part of the exciting challenge is staying away from the temptation and come out ahead in the industry. PR is all about communicating effectively and appropriately, and that is what I have been studying here at Marquette. I am confident in my skills, and I hope you can understand that I am not entering the "Hollywood" version of Public Relations--though that might be a fun challenge someday...
Sincerely,
Katie
