Caitlin,
You clearly do not understand what public relations is all about. Over the years it has earned a bad reputation through a few bad apples. But let me tell you what it means to me. PR is a means to communicate ideas, thoughts and expressions from a person or group to a larger group. In some cases, a PR representative must clarify or explain to the public what a company (or individual) did, that on the surface, looks worse than it is. A PR representative's job is to get the truth across to the public. It is easier to believe the bad things than the good. Especially when it comes to public figures, people feel the need to believe these bad things, and they feel the need to spread their opinions on others. This is why public relations is necessary.
I hope this helps you understand a little more about PR, and I hope this will change your mind about PR representatives do.
Best,
Libby
